3M Automotive Aftermarket Division Establishes Standard Operating Procedures

3M Automotive Aftermarket Division has established a new set of standard operating procedures (SOPs), along with the products and tools to go with them, to tackle collision repair jobs in an efficient and cost effective way. These new SOPs can be found online at http://3mcollision.com/library/sops.

3M says its SOPs help teach basic and advanced skills, demonstrate proper techniques and showcase innovative product solutions. Designed for car enthusiasts, technical students and automotive professionals, the SOPs provide step-by-step guidance through a range of projects to help ensure repairs are done professionally and efficiently.

The 3M SOPs for aluminum repair cover:

  • Frequently asked questions
  • Aluminum repair matrix
  • Dent repair
  • Panel replacement

A number of 3M products can be used for high-strength aluminum repairs, including the 3M File Belt Sander and 3M Panel Bonding Adhesive. The File Belt Sander is used for grinding out self-piercing rivets, removing seam sealer and preparing surfaces for rivet-bonded repairs. Panel Bonding Adhesive can be used to bond door skins, roof skins, quarter panels and box sides. Both products were recently approved by Ford for use in repairs on the Ford F-150 pickup.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) reminds those preparing for ASE certification or recertification to consider taking the official practice tests as part of their test preparation process.

“Figuring out how to best study for an exam can be a challenge," said Matt Shepanek, vice president, credential testing programs for ASE. "Those preparing for ASE certification can get a good idea of what to expect by adding the official ASE practice tests to their study plans. ASE practice tests are delivered exclusively online and can help automotive professionals prepare by allowing them to try out questions of similar content and format to those used on the real ASE tests.”
