Celebrity Car Builder Takes I-CAR’s Waterborne Course
3/10/2009

I-CAR  welcomed a celebrity visitor to its classroom recently when car builder Rich Evans – who’s been featured on the Speed Channel’s “Chop, Cut, Rebuild” – took the new training program Waterborne Products, Systems and Application (REF07) on March 3 in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Evans, owner of Huntington Beach Bodyworks, noted that the program discusses what’s new in waterborne materials without focusing on one brand. Overall, he said one of the best features of the program is its focus on technique and safety.

“To effectively apply waterborne material, the technique needs to be a little different than when applying solventborne material,” Evans said. “Waterborne needs to be applied in several coats requiring more overlap than when applying solvents. As a car builder and refinisher, I use various application techniques every day, but not everyone in the collision repair industry is as knowledgeable in this area.”

Evans said he also appreciated the spotlight on safety, focusing on the necessity of a fresh air system, the use of latex gloves so that chemicals aren’t absorbed into the skin and other safety tips.

“To me, training is another tool for the toolbox – the better trained I am, the faster and better I work,” Evans said. “Keeping in tune with what’s new in the industry helps me to make money as well as save money.”

The I-CAR Waterborne Products, Systems, and Application training program details:

• Types of waterborne materials in use
• Differences between waterborne and solvent-borne systems
• Surface preparation and equipment requirements
• Drying processes
• Storage and waste disposal considerations
• Typical conversion processes

Registration for Waterborne Products, Systems, and Application is open, and new classes are being added to I-CAR’s class schedule on a continuing basis.
