AIA Calls Latest Anti-Steering Legislation ‘Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’

4/29/2008

In its most recent issue of Advocate, the American Insurance Association (AIA) calls the latest anti-steering legislation a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” and says it could cost consumers millions of dollars in higher repair costs.

“While proponents of new legislation market it as being pro-consumer," the article states, “the reality is that the legislation reduces marketplace competition and restricts consumer access to useful information about their auto repairs.”

The article goes on to say that “true anti-steering laws have been in place for many years, and companies in all 50 states do not dictate to their policyholders where to have auto repair work done. They support consumers’ right to choose their own repair services.”

The article also explains the typical claims process a consumer goes through, and also summarizes the latest anti-steering bills being proposed in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri and Washington.
