ASK BSB:Supplements and the Law
10/22/2009 2:25:36 PM

Dear BSB:

Is there a federal law that requires insurance companies to write a supplement within 48 hours of receiving notice?

Dear Stymied by Supplements:

No. First, there is no federal law that requires an insurer to write an estimate. (In fact, state law typically doesn’t require insurers to write estimates – they do so for their own purposes.)

Is there a federal law that requires insurance companies to write a supplement within 48 hours. I think there may be a few states that require, via the insurance regulations, an insurer to “reinspect” a vehicle within 48 hours or some other designated amount of time, but certainly no federal law.
