U.S. House Judiciary Committee Votes to Pass McCarran-Ferguson Repeal for Health Insurers
10/23/2009

The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted 20-9 in favor of H.R. 3596, the Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Act, which would partially repeal the McCarran-Ferguson Act as it applies to health insurers. The House leadership has not scheduled consideration for the floor.

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) says it supports a repeal of the McCarran-Ferguson Act, including those protections for property and casualty insurers. A full repeal is proposed in H.R. 1583, which was introduced by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., and is co-sponsored by Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., and would impact the insurance industry as a whole, including property and casualty insurers.
