PDR Techs Question Farmer's Change in DRP Policy

2/4/2010 9:46:05 AM

In what will most likely sound like a familiar story to collision repairers, members of the National Alliance of Paintless Dent Repair Technicians (NAPDRT) are accusing Farmer’s Insurance Group of limiting consumer and collision repair facility choice by now directing its DRP shops to sublet PDR jobs exclusively to two national PDR firms, PARS and Dent Wizard.

NAPDRT found out about Farmer’s change in policy after obtaining a letter from Farmer’s to its Circle of Dependability (COD) direct repair shops. The letter named “national COD vendors PARS and Dent Wizard as the primary contact for customers in scheduling PDR, even if conventional repairs are determined to be the customer’s best option." The letter went on to say, "In the event conventional repairs are necessary, PARS and Dent Wizard will sublet those repairs to a COD facility when one is available in the market area and the customer agrees COD is still their best choice.”

“The direction of all ‘catastrophe and storm-related losses’ to PARS and Dent Wizard as the primary contact for customers in scheduling PDR and conventional repairs places limitations on the consumer and the collision repair facilities and impedes the relationship between consumers and collision repair shops and independent PDR vendors,” said Tommy Clayton, president of NAPDRT.

NAPDRT says it’s encouraging Farmer's Insurance Group to contact the association to discuss this program and that it will continue to monitor the issue.

One good thing though is that the Wiz is only giving shops 20% and no more. Thats a good thing for our industry. Too many PDR companies have been giving away too much to land a deal.

I've seen a bunch of PDR guys come and go and have yet to see but a few that I would put a warranty on yet. I wouldn't have any of the guys from these two companies in our shop.

Direct Repair Programs are steering and price fixing in on neat little package. They should be illegal.

Another day in our industry (conventional AutoBody repair) and its getting ugly now for the PDR guys. Lets face it people, its all politics and lack of enforcing the laws by our individual states DOI's. Note to the PDR people; Your such a small group and Insurers will enjoy your services to save themselves money...........UNIONIZE yourself as an industry! And I mean RIGHT NOW! If you do not do this you will suffer conventional repair shop problems. The insurer's will reduce you to immigrant workers wages of the 70's. What I mean by this is; I have 30 years exp. with I-Car certs and as a flat rate tech. I MUST play the role of Bodyman and Mechanic and also am ask to diagnose electrical problems to my lame ability (for Free) at a pay rate that is not higher than $18.00 an hour. It is impossible to beat any "Structural Frame Time Allowance" allowed by any Insurer written estimate and particularly at a DRP facility. This means as a flat rate tech. I will only make my hourly rate or less! This is critical thinking for the safety of the vehicles occupants in the future and the wage I get to earn is less than $18.00 an hour! Our secretary earns more than that an hour for Christ sake. Unions were created to thwart Suppression.

I've been saying that the insurance companies have been steering for years but no one listens. I cannot compete with DW and PARS when it comes to staff but the quality of our repairs surpass theirs.

Us independent PDR guys don't like it either. This is a case where backdoor deals were obviously made by some bigger companies to monopolize our industry.

PDR companies running body shops, interesting turn of events there. Smells like collusion and steering.

Imagine that! DW is doing that with Allstate already! Oh well, lets see how it pans out! I bet DW and PARS want the shops to kick them back a small % for carrying the paper!

Once again, consumer has no choice of where to take their vehicle for repairs.
