OEM vs. Aftermarket Structural Crash Parts

A presentation by I-CAR instructor Toby Chess at a recent Collision Industry Conference has raised questions industry-wide about the dependability and safety of structural aftermarket crash parts, including bumper reinforcements, steel bumpers, bumper brackets, radiator supports and absorbers.

Associations representing collision repairers and manufacturers have warned against their use, while aftermarket parts manufacturer Keystone has begun testing aftermarket bumper reinforcements to determine if they comply with federal safety standards. Legislators are working to make it easier for manufacturers to create non-OEM crash parts by creating an exception in design patent law.

CIC Technical Presentation Stymied by LKQ Threat

Lets go to work as a group and get done what we all know is a the right thing to do.

I have been fighting against using non-crash tested parts in my shop since 1998. I have spoken & had CAPA purchase a/m parts from us & they told me that they did not get many parts returned back from KEYSTONE that did not fit properly.I also have spoken directly to SARA at CAPA and asked the question do you crash test parts, & at that time which was the 1st of this year 2010 they did not crash test any of the parts that they certify. I would also like to know how the people at CAPA get their pay & is it owned by an AFTER MARKET PARTS SUPPLIER ???. I have been in the Industry for 36 YEARS and I am very involved in GA about having the Insurance Dept. check into the repairs with a/m parts, we find how different they are every day. Please get back with me. Thank You
