The Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition is asking its supporters to
enlist the support of their customers in getting the Massachusetts House
of Representatives to vote on SB 2517. The bill has already passed the
Massachusetts Senate.
"With the legislature's formal session ending on July 31, it's
critically important that members of the Massachusetts House of
Representatives receive calls from repairers as well as their
customers," said coalition spokesman Art Kinsman. "The independent
repairers have done an excellent job of making their voice heard on
Beacon Hill. It is time for them to get their customers, who will also
benefit from passage of Right to Repair, to contact their State
Representatives and ask them to vote favorably on Senate Bill 2517."
Supporters say the bill protects consumer choice and saves drivers money
by requiring automobile manufacturers to share relevant repair and
safety information with independent automotive technicians and repair
shops.
The bill also protects automobile manufacturers’ proprietary
information, eliminating the possibility of aftermarket part production.
Vehicle security codes are also protected by the legislation.
"Anyone who has been to Fenway, the Fleet Center, or Gillette Stadium
knows all too well that the reason you pay $7.50 for a beer and $9 for a
burger is that when you are a captive audience, you are going to pay
more," said Kinsman. "For consumers to ensure this doesn't happen to
them regarding their car repairs, we suggest they take a few minutes and
call their State Representative and ask for a yes vote on Senate Bill
2517."
