The Automotive Service Association (ASA) recently
discussed the increasing problem of counterfeit auto parts, including airbags,
in the
New York Post.
"Counterfeit airbags scare us," ASA President
Ron Pyle told the Post. "Airbags run $2,000 to $4,000, and the underground
market sells replacement airbags that are inferior and in some cases are not
necessarily replacements, even worse, just selling cosmetic components with a
cover and no inner [bag]."
The article stated that the federal Customs and Border
Protection's Office of International Trade reported that airbags were the No. 1
seized counterfeit auto part in 2010 and year-to-date 2011.
