Driver Slams Camaro into DUI Checkpoint

A North Carolina driver made himself easy pickins for police when he crashed his car right into a DUI checkpoint. Not surprisingly, police believe alcohol played a role in the crash.

The Hickory Record reports that in the early hours of Dec. 4, Douglas Southard, 21, slammed his red 1989 Chevrolet Camaro into the state's mobile Breath Alcohol Testing lab, known as the BAT Mobile, at a DUI checkpoint. Eight people — a magistrate, several police officers and two suspects caught by the checkpoint — were inside at the time, but only Southard was injured in the crash, according to the newspaper.

Police estimate he was driving between 35 and 40 mph when he hit the checkpoint.

“In the officer’s opinion, alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor in the crash,” said Maj. Kevin Yarborough of the Newton Police Department.

Charges are pending the outcome of the Newton Police Department’s investigation.
