Diamond Standard Brand Enters into Consulting Agreement with Airbag Deployment Expert

The Diamond Standard Brand Group has announced it has entered a consulting agreement with Dr. David Breed, considered an expert  on airbag system development, performance and deployment. Breed holds several engineering degrees from MIT and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in mechanical engineering. He is the recipient of the H.H. Bliss Award as one of the inventors of the airbag and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Award for Safety Engineering.

“Dr. Breed brings to the table over 40 years of experience, demonstrated knowledge, numerous SAE Publications and approximately 200 patents in the automotive products field involving airbags and occupant sensing systems for smart airbags now in production in some OE vehicles,” said Geoff Crane, business development manager of Diamond Standard Brand.

In his current position as chairman of both Automotive Technologies International and Intelligent Technologies International Inc. of Boonton, N.J., Booth is focused on advancing the state of the art in automotive safety, its related products and eliminating automotive accidents and fatalities through the use of centimeter accurate maps and differential GPS.

Mike O’Neal, president of Diamond Standard Parts, LLC, said, “We believe that Dr. Breed’s addition to the Diamond Standard team will be a valuable voice of reason into the industry to expand its understanding of airbag operation and system performance using replacement parts which have been tested and certified to be equivalent to the OE parts they replace. I have no doubt he will be very helpful in the technical aspects and testing of structural parts going forward."

"Diamond Standard was prompted to reach out to Dr. Breed in response to recent CIC meeting presentations and subsequent press releases from at least one OE which attempted to make the case that aftermarket structural parts ‘could, might or may’ lead to occupant injury or variances in unintended lower speed airbag deployments which is not documented nor proven," said O’Neal.  "They are going down a road blindly driven by outside marketing firms who have no hands on knowledge of what they are talking about."

Diamond Standard certified parts and bumper components are available in the USA and Canada through limited quality distributors, including the AQRP quality assurance program at Keystone, an LKQ company.
