Pennsylvania Bill Adding Recall Checks into Safety Inspections

House Bill 2297 would require state vehicle safety inspections to include a review of any potential safety recalls using the vehicle’s VIN number.

From Tire Review

Pennsylvania is exploring a bill that would add recall checks to routine safety inspections.

Pennsylvania House Bill (H.B.) 2297 would require state vehicle safety inspections to include a review of any potential safety recalls using the vehicle’s VIN number. If an issue is found, the shop must notify the owner of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall. Otherwise, if the vehicle meets the usual safety criteria, shops are permitted to issue a certification of inspection.

According to H.B. 2297, the term “safety recall” means a determination by a manufacturer or NHTSA that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a Federal motor vehicle safety standard. If enacted, the bill will take effect within 60 days.

H.B. 2297 is under further review.

The new bill is supported by the Automotive Service Association.
