A bill under consideration by Tennessee lawmakers would improve enforcement of the state’s mandatory liability-insurance law. The bill, effective Jan. 1, 2013, would require insurers to submit confirmation of auto policy sales or renewals to a database.
The database would be operated by the State Revenue Department, and it would be up to county clerks to determine whether drivers meet financial responsibility requirements before issuing certificates of title or renewing vehicle registrations.
Insurers also would have to report when policies are canceled.
