The world’s first self-driving semi-truck has hit the road for a long haul, according to Wired magazine. But before you get thoughts of “Duel” in your head, the 1970s movie directed by Steven Spielberg where a semi takes on a monster quality and starts stalking a hapless salesman on a road trip, or “Trucks,” the short story by Stephen King where 18-wheelers are suddenly brought to independent life by an unknown force and proceed to gruesomely kill every human in sight, think again.
This truck is the Freightliner Inspiration, a high-tech vehicle made by Daimler that will reportedly make long-haul road transportation safer, cheaper and better for the planet. It will only take control on the highway, and if it encounters a scenario it can’t handle, it will alert the human driver to take over.
