California Department of Insurance Appoints New Legislative Director

Robert Herrell to also serve as deputy commissioner.

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced that effective April 1, 2013, Robert Herrell will join the executive team of the California Department of Insurance (CDI) as a deputy commissioner and legislative director.

"I am extremely confident in Robert’s ability to advance our mission of insurance protection for all Californians into the legislative arena," said Commissioner Jones. "I look forward to leveraging his considerable experience as we continue to ensure consumers are protected and their insurance needs are addressed."

Herrell’s public policy experience is extensive, working in a number of important areas, including consumer protection, financial and consumer privacy, healthcare, immigration, economic development, transportation, energy, and environmental protection.

Herrell served as staff director for former Senator Jackie Speier and was the lead staff on consumer financial privacy legislation and dietary supplement reform. He also served as chief consultant and senior consultant to the Assembly Consumer Protection, Governmental Efficiency and Economic Development Committee under then-Assemblywoman Susan Davis, where he worked on a wide variety of consumer protection and economic development issues. Herrell’s legislative experience also includes working as the legislative director for Dave Jones during his tenure in the State Assembly, 2007-2008.

Herrell is returning to California after four years in Chicago, where he served as the vice president of an Internet start-up company focused on the Latino community.
