Cars and the Stars

Forget defensive driving. It’s all in the stars. As it turns out, we’re just born with it (or under it, if you want to get technical).

Coming in a close second were Taurus drivers (the astrological sign, not the Ford), born between April 20 and May 20. That should come as no surprise since Taureans, signified by the bull, often are described as obstinate and inflexible.

Pisceans, described as risk takers and dare devils, are born between Feb. 19 and March 20 and came in third.

Warren Duke, Suncorp Metway national manager of personal insurance, says while the study was light-hearted, it was interesting that Geminis, typically described as restless, easily bored and frustrated by things moving slowly, had more car accidents than any other sign.

The study is bad news for Geminis but good news if you’re a Capricorn, which means your birthday falls between Dec. 22 and Jan. 19. You finally have the proof you’ve been searching for that lets everyone know once and for all that you really are the best driver. Those with the star sign Capricorn typically are described as patient and careful, which makes sense since they had the least car accident claims, according to the study.

Duke says the study also showed that males had less car accident claims than females in 2001, although men caused more damage so their car repairs cost more.

"Women make significantly fewer claims than men until their late 20s," he says. "But after that, women age 29 and over edge ahead of men, making slightly more claims."

Though the company is always looking for trends in claims to see if there are ways to reduce pricing, Duke says there’s no intention to introduce astrology as a rating factor for motor insurance. (Whew, as a Pisces I’m glad to hear that.)
