Conifer Auto Body, located in Morrison, Colo., was seized by the Colorado Department of Revenue on April 23 for owing roughly $48,000 in unpaid sales taxes, about a year’s worth.
The Fairplay Flume reported that the body shop’s owner, Doug Cross, could not be reached for comment and that a phone number listed for Conifer Auto Body was disconnected.
Mark Couch, a Department of Revenue spokesperson, told The Flume that items left in the building will be auctioned off, but a date has yet to be scheduled. He also said it’s likely that Conifer also owes money to other entities.
“Customers are the ones who pay the sales tax and they trust the vendor is going to remit that sales tax to the state local communities,” Couch told The Flume, noting that sales tax is normally paid monthly. “It’s not the business’s money; it’s the customers’ money that the business happens to be collecting and is supposed to be turning over to the taxing jurisdictions.”
Conifer Auto Body’s Web site says it has been in business for more than 10 years.
