Following the lead of the airline industry, Honda has designed a device that records impacts and the events immediately before and after, much like an airplane’s black box. After a collision, the small recorder saves data captured 12 seconds preceding and following the incident. A windshield camera with a 135-degree view captures the collision, as well as sound, speed and acceleration, onto a memory card.
Honda’s black box could have implications for insurance claims and can be activated at any time to capture driving data. The system is only available in Japan.
