Illinois State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-81, has introduced House Bill 6169, which would require vehicle storage providers to send a certified letter detailing their rates to the vehicle lienholder before imposing fees. It also states that the lienholder must have the opportunity to inspect the vehicle on the premises.
Under H.B. 6169, the responsibility for identifying the lienholder would fall to the Illinois secretary of state, thus increasing cycle time for shops, creating unnecessary paperwork and record keeping burdens and failing to address the root problem of holding the negligent vehicle owner responsible for his or her automobile. Finally, ASA is concerned that the state government infrastructure is not in place to perform the required duties.
ASA opposes H.B. 6169. ASA is asking Illinois repair shops to go to ASA’s legislative website, www.TakingTheHill.com, and select “Alerts” to send a letter to their state legislators in opposition to the legislation.
