Info on Permits: Spraybooths

Spraybooths come with many decisions: what type to buy, from which manufacturer, where to place it in the shop, etc. And not only do they come with decisions, but they're also attached to responsibility.

Among the responsibilities, shop owners need to determine whether
or not their shops are in nonattainment areas – areas that don’t
meet national air-quality standards. If a shop is in a
nonattainment area, it’s likely that its booth will need an accompanying
permit, or at least be registered.

Most major metropolitan areas are nonattainment zones, which require
permitted sites to keep a VOC Tracking Spray Log to verify the
booths are operating within established limits. (This requirement
includes sites that don’t require permits due to insufficient
VOC volume.)

Air-quality programs distinguish between new and existing sources
of air pollution. New facilities or mobile sources (vehicles)
are viewed more stringently than existing ones – in some cases,
booths may be grandfathered, but it’s advisable to get this determination
in writing.

Phone numbers for regional and state EPA air-quality offices are
provided here so you can find out about your area’s regulations.
