Is Google on Auto-Pilot, Headed Straight Toward the Insurance Business?

Google's recent announcement that it will accept responsibility for any accidents resulting from a flaw in the design of its driverless cars may be the opening it needs to slip into the insurance business.

Forbes reported that if self-driving cars prove to be a major disruptor in the insurance industry, they could provide an opening for Google to become a major player, according to one industry expert.

Some may find the recent announcement that Google (as well as Volvo and Mercedes-Benz) will accept responsibility for any accidents resulting from a flaw in the design to be simply showmanship at this stage. But there may be more to this decision than meets the eye.

Forbes reported that Blake Corbet, a managing director at PI Financial Corp. in Vancouver, B.C., says this could be the opening Google needs to slip itself into the insurance business. Corbet explains that Google’s willingness to take on full liability for accidents is a Trojan Horse in the multi-trillion dollar insurance industry.
