New NAIC Reports Provide Snapshot of Insurance Complaints

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has launched new reports on its Consumer Information Source (CIS) that summarize consumers’ top complaints against insurance companies. The reports will be updated on a monthly basis.

Launched in 2001, CIS provides basic company-specific information as reported to the NAIC — including amount of premiums written, assets, liabilities and licensing information — for insurance companies that file annual statements with the NAIC. The site also allows consumers to file complaints and review statistical information on previously resolved complaints against a company.

The new CIS reports aggregate the system’s complaint data, providing information about complaints by reason and type of insurance, as well as by how the complaints were resolved. The new reports include:

  • Most Common Complaints by Reason for Complaint – This report provides a three-year trend regarding the reasons consumers file complaints.
  • Most Common Complaints by Type of Insurance – This report provides a three-year trend regarding which types of coverage receive a higher or lower number of complaints.
  • Most Common Complaints by Disposition – This report provides a three-year trend regarding how complaints are ultimately resolved.
