New York DOI Ranks Insurers by Number of Complaints

The New York Deparment of Insurance (DOI) has released its annual ranking of insurers by number of complaints and total value of premiums written in the state. With $140 million in premiums and zero complaints upheld, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company topped the list of 167 insurers. At 165, and the lowest-ranked insurer with over $1 million in policies, was Long Island Insurance Company, with $10 million in premiums and 265 upheld complaints.

The list uses a complaint ratio — total value of premiums versus total number of upheld complaints — to rank insurers. Fifty-one insurers on the list had zero complaints upheld.

The list also reveals the total number of complaints made against insurers. The DOI says it shows the total for informational purposes, but doesn’t count complaints that were not upheld or withdrawn for its rankings. Nationwide had a total of 55 complaints, while Long Island Insurance had 355.

Other notable insurers on the list included:

• Allstate Insurance Company, ranked 105th: 180 upheld complaints and $1.3 billion in premiums

• State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, ranked 80th: 60 upheld complaints and $963 million in premiums

• Allstate Property and Casualty Insurance Company, ranked 74th: 25 upheld complaints and $490 million in premiums

• GEICO General Insurance Company, ranked 54th: 15 upheld complaints and $1.2 billion in premiums

•  Progressive Northern Insurance Company, ranked 52nd: one upheld complaint and $110.7 million in premiums

• Progressive Advanced Insurance Company, ranked 12th: zero upheld complaints and $18 million in premiums

The department noted that for the first time, the list ranks individual companies only and not the corporate groups of which these companies may be members.
