Cars and trucks painted with PPG products captured an array of prestigious awards at the recent SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The annual show attracts automotive industry professionals from around the world, and this year more than 100,000 visitors were treated to displays of custom-built vehicles exhibiting the latest trends in hot colors and advanced finishes.

“The wins affirmed PPG’s leadership position as the custom car world’s top choice in automotive refinish products,” the company said.

Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop of Gadsden, Ala., displayed a 1932 Ford Tudor sedan that scooped up key honors. The sedan took second place in the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, won a Ford Best of Show Outstanding Achievement in Design award, qualified as a Mothers Polish Shine Top 10 award finalist and captured the Bryan Fuller Moto Top Paint Award.

The shop’s 1954 Chevy pickup with a Quad Turbo Duramax Diesel V-8 gathered its own recognition: a Chevy Design award for Truck of the Year and the ejudged.com/MaxTow Best Diesel Performance Build award. It, too, was a Mothers Polish Shine Top 10 award finalist. Both vehicles got their deep black finish using PPG’s Vibrance Collection VP2050 DTM High Build Primer, Deltron DP90LF Non Sanding Epoxy Primer Black and Deltron 2000 DBC9700 Basecoat Black along with the Global Refinish System brand’s D8115 Matte Clearcoat, D8117 Semi-Gloss Clearcoat and D8152 Performance + Glamour Clearcoat. Greg Chalcraft sprayed the finish on both winners.

SpeedKore Performance in Grafton, Wis., received a Best of Show award from Ford for its superb 1970 Boss 302 Mustang, built for Robert Downey Jr., and an Outstanding Achievement in Design award, also from Ford, for its dramatic 2018 Mustang GT convertible. Painter Bill Nicoud used a Deltron 2000 DBC Basecoat Khaki custom mix, Deltron DAS3025 V-SEAL Acrylic Urethane Sealer Gray and Global Refinish System D894 Clear to give the Boss 302 Mustang a winning look. Bob Gibson painted the 2018 Mustang GT with Deltron 2000 DBC Basecoat Lava Gray, DeltronDAS3025 V-Seal Acrylic Urethane Sealer Gray and Global Refinish System D894 Clear to create its dramatic look.

Andy Leach and his team at Cal Auto Creations in Bennington, Neb., picked up the 2017 Mothers Polish Shine Award for a 1930 Ford Model A coupe painted by Charley Hutton at his Charley Hutton Color Studio in Nampa, Idaho. Charley gave the car, named “After Thought,” its “Paleozoic Sea Blue” finish using Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat. Accent colors included Pepper Grey on the engine and chassis, “After Thought Gold” on the wheels and Titanium on the blower. Global Refinish System D8152 Performance + Glamour Clearcoat was used on the body and D8115 Matte Clearcoat on the satin colors.

Miranda Built of Delray Beach, Fla., won a Mothers Polish Excellence in Automotive Design award for its 1969 Chevy Camaro “NFA.” Jeremy Miranda and his group worked with The Refinery by Adam Krause of Manteno, Ill. Paint specialist Krause gave the Camaro its winning finish with Deltron DP90LF Non Sanding Epoxy Primer, Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat, Global Refinish System D8115 Matte Clearcoat and Deltron Concept DCU2021 Urethane Clear.

Hollywood Hot Rods of Burbank, Calif., took third in the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition with a show-stopping red 1936 Packard Roadster dubbed “Mulholland.” Troy Ladd and his crew used Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat and Global Refinish System D8188 Glamour LV Clearcoat to give the classic its outstanding “Mulholland Merlot” finish.

Dave and Dom Tucci of Tucci Hot Rods in Marcy, N.Y., took home an Outstanding Achievement in Design award from Ford for a 2018 Ford Mustang in Shadow Black. Painter John Ramsey from John’s Auto Restoration in Rome, N.Y., coated the car with Deltron DBC9700 Basecoat Black and DMD 1683 Basecoat Black. Jason Kilmer of Seattle’s KXK Dynamics then wet sanded the original clear and Ramsey stepped back in to apply Global Refinish System D8152 Performance + Glamour Clearcoat on the main body and Vibrance Collection VC5225 Soft Touch Clear on the 3-D printed parts to give the car its distinct appearance.

LGE-CTS Motorsports in San Dimas, Calif., won an Outstanding Achievement in Design award from Ford for its 2018 Baja Forged Adventurer Ford Expedition. Theresa Contreras painted the truck using Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat with a custom mix of Vibrance Collection effects to create gold to silver color-changing stripes and accents that took on a green-blue tone.

The Roadster Shop in Mundelein, Ill., received the GM People’s Choice Design award for the “AXIS” Camaro. It was also a finalist in the Battle of the Builders.

“Once again, PPG has helped custom car enthusiasts raise the bar of ingenuity,” said Bill Shaw, PPG director, refinish marketing, Automotive Refinish. “Some of the most talented painters and builders in the business unleashed their imaginations and showed SEMA attendees the creative heights that PPG’s refinish products allowed them to reach. The painters have the vision; we provide the means and the awards follow. We are extremely proud of their achievements.”
