A Washington County, Pa., couple started their engagement off on the wrong foot when a romantic nighttime drive ended in a head-on collision.
On Sept. 16, Brian Shaffer proposed to his girlfriend while parked at a scenic overlook in his Dodge Dakota. On the drive home, he leaned over to give his new fiancée a peck on the cheek, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, but the kiss quickly turned sour.
“He leaned over and gave me a peck,” Shaffer’s fiancée Kristi Burchik told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. “Next thing I know, a car is coming toward us.”
Unable to avoid the head-on collision, Shaffer threw himself in front of Burchik. A father driving with his 11-year-old son and 10-year-old stepdaughter were in the oncoming car.
Shaffer walked away with a punctured lung and broken ribs, while Burchik received bruises and a broken nose. The father in the other car suffered broken bones, his son suffered a concussion, and his stepdaughter had cuts and a sore back, the Post-Gazette reported.
