STRANGE BUT TRUE: Vandals Treat Body Shop Like Bumper Car Rink

There were plenty of smashed cars at Massey Collision Center on Jan. 4, but the damage wasn’t caused by on-road accidents. Dan Massey – owner of the Hagerstown, Md., shop – came to work on a Sunday morning to find vandals had treated the vehicles in his shop like bumper cars, demolishing his office in the process, WHAG-TV Channel 25 reported.

Police said the suspects randomly smashed the cars into the building and each other, and one car was even taken for a spin in a nearby Wal-Mart parking lot. Massey told WHAG that shop equipment, computers and other valuables were left untouched, making the break-in even more bizarre. He estimated that the damage to the vehicles and the office totaled between $50,000 and $100,000.

“I’ve talked to numerous people in the business, and they’ve never seen anything like this,” Massey said. “It’s outlandish. It’s crazy.”

Surveillance footage from Wal-Mart caught two unidentified teenaged boys involved with the incident. In spite of the in-shop demolition derby, business carried on as usual the next day.

“I’m sure we’re going to have to change our security procedures around here,” Massey said. “It’s kind of like trying to defend against insanity.
