Tweaked Laser Pointer Can Bring Self-Driving Car to a Halt

Scientist proves point that self-driving cars’ reliance on laser-ranging systems make them susceptible to hacking.

laser-pointerPC Magazine reported recently that a tweaked type of laser pointer is capable of not only slowing down a self-driving car, but bringing it to a screeching halt.

Jonathan Petit, a principal scientist at software security company Security Innovation, combined a low-power laser and a pulse generator to develop a tool that can trick a self-driving car into thinking something is ahead and slow it down. If the laser tool overwhelms the sensors on the car, it can even bring the vehicle to a stop.

The issue is that self-driving cars’ reliance on laser-ranging systems make them susceptible to hacks like Petit’s.
