It’s been GREAT Being Publisher of BodyShop Business!

Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the pleasure of being the publisher of the BodyShop Business brands, but it’s time to turn the reins over to a new leader – Sean Donohue – who will continue all the great work that has been done and bring fresh ideas and direction to the brands.

Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the pleasure of being the publisher of the BodyShop Business brands. BodyShop Business and its associated brands are the collision industry’s premier sources for news and information. The collision space is a vibrant yet challenging industry that’s constantly changing. All that change is what makes the space so interesting.

It’s time to turn the reins over to a new leader who will continue all the great work that has been done, but also bring fresh ideas and direction to the brands. Sean Donohue is just the right person to do that.

Sean has been with Babcox Media for more than 10 years and has led the tool and equipment properties as well as our powersports publications. He’s a natural for this market since so much of our business relies on the tool and equipment world to do the collision repair work that we do. I know Sean will do a great job leading the BodyShop Business brand into the future.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the efforts of our BodyShop Business staff. For the past 10 years, they’ve made the news and information on the collision repair industry accurate and interesting for all of you. None of it would have come together without the efforts of our longtime industry expert and editor, Jason Stahl. Every month, Jason works to ensure that the industry’s important issues and products are brought to all of you in a creative and informative manner.

Over the years, we’ve tackled many interesting subjects and tried new things. In our business, new and innovative ways of delivering information are essential for keeping our products fresh and interesting for all of you. I know the future is bright for BodyShop Business with Sean and Jason guiding the future of this great brand.

I won’t be too far away; I’ll still be at Babcox as the group publisher of Counterman, aftermarketNews (AMN) and Engine Builder and will be watching with fond memories.

Best of luck to all of you!

Exit Strategies: Personal Vision & Financial Planning

The most critical first step in an exit or transition plan is to develop a financial plan and personal vision of what your life will look like post-business.

Jerry was a 63-year-old auto body shop owner who contacted me regarding putting together an exit strategy. Like most shop owners, he had become tired of the day-to-day grind of dealing with the back-and-forth fights with the insurance carriers, yet he still loved the idea of being a part of a business he built from the ground up. Ideally, he would have liked his production manager, Evan, to become his heir apparent, yet he had no idea if Evan was interested in owning the shop or if he was even capable of doing so. His shop was a prime candidate for a consolidator, and he had received an offer from one, yet he cared about his employees and wanted to make sure they were taken care of. Also, he was unsure what he would do with himself if he did not have a place to go. He did not know where to turn.
