Ohio Technical College will take its "Fuel Your Future Tour" to the Detroit Autorama, Feb. 25-27 at Cobo Center in Detroit, giving attendees a chance to learn about airbrushing techniques and career opportunities from the automotive technical college.
The display features renowned airbrush artist Richard Markham, who will showcase popular skills like airbrushing flames, true fire and skulls during live demonstrations. Markham will also share details of Ohio Technical College’s Custom Paint and Graphics program, a 12-week course that teaches airbrushing, 3-D paint effects, exotic paint, chameleon colors, flames and pinstriping.
"We are heavily involved in the Detroit Autorama with demonstrations, contests and scholarships because many students come to our Cleveland-based school from the Detroit area," said Tom King, OTC’s VP of Enrollment Management/Technical Training. "With such a wide variety of technical training programs available we offer everything from Classic Car Restoration and Custom Bike Building to Auto-Diesel and High Performance and Racing students can develop a strong education to help them start rewarding careers in the automotive industry."
King will address high school students during the Autorama’s Career Day event on Friday, encouraging future techs to pursue their passion in the industry. Students who attend the Career Day presentation will have a chance to win one of 10 scholarships valued at $1,000 each to attend OTC, as well as numerous prizes including a Matco Silver Edge tool set and weekend airbrush workshops.
In addition, the college will host the OTC-Edelbrock Carburetor Challenge and a Custom Paint Contest for a chance to win Ohio Technical College scholarships. The Carburetor Challenge pits 28 high school teams against each other as they battle to tear down and rebuild an Edelbrock Carburetor in the fastest time. The first place team receives $5,000 each; second place gets $4,000 each; third place receives $3,000 each; and all other participates earn $1,500 each.
During the custom paint contest, area high schools will design a Stylin’ Concepts hood scoop and will be judged by the crowd and Markham to receive prizes. First place will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship plus a Richard Markham airbrush kit and video per student; second place receives $1,500 per student; third place $1,000 per student; and all other participates $500 per student.
