GM Free Car Insurance Deal Raising Concern with Agents

A General Motors promotion that extends car buyers in the
Pacific Northwest a year of free liability and damage insurance from MetLife
Auto & Home is raising questions with some insurance agents, according to a
report from the Insurance Journal.

The deal is only for those drivers in Oregon and
Washington who purchase a 2010, 2011 or 2012 GM car, truck or crossover before
Sept. 6. The insurance policy covers liability and physical damage, above the
states’ required minimum standard. Policies have separate $500 deductibles for
collision and non-collision coverage.

According to the Insurance Journal, the Independent
Insurance Agents & Brokers of America has concerns about licensing and
regulation in regard to the free insurance offer.

Consumer issues were raised, too.

John Timm, president of the Independent Agents and
Brokers of Oregon, told the Insurance Journal, "If you have more than one
car, what happens to the provisions of your own auto policy where you don’t
have automatic coverage unless all your vehicles are insured with that
company?"

Timm also had concerns about rental cars, wondering if
MetLife would cover them or the person’s current carrier.

According to the Insurance Journal, the promotion was
given the okay by the two states’ insurance regulators.
