Ford has posted a second YouTube video detailing the difference between OEM and aftermarket crash parts. The video is posted on the official Ford Motor Company YouTube channel aimed at consumers and is hosted by Ford repairability engineer Larry Coan. The original, posted last year, was featured on the Ford Crash Parts channel and was hosted by Advanced Technology Service Engineering Manager Jim Groate. Both videos, which mirror 2010 presentations at Collision Industry Conference (CIC) meetings, compare performance of genuine Ford parts and aftermarket collision parts using computer-aided simulation tests, crash sled tests and vehicle crash test data.
"In all cases, genuine Ford parts perform as designed. Aftermarket parts’ performance leads to questions of doubt concerning proper airbag deployment," the new video’s description reads.
The new video also features the controversial "saw test," in which a Sawzall is used to cut into aftermarket and OEM bumper beams. The test drew fire last year from the Automotive Body Parts Association (ABPA), among others, for being unscientific and not a true measure of how a part will perform.
“Crash test results prove that the spurious claim that aftermarket parts are less safe and less effective in a collision than car company parts is simply not true,” the ABPA said in 2010.
