Delays and claims denials topped consumers’ top reasons for lodging complaints against insurance companies last year, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
A total of 195,669 confirmed consumer complaints on insurance companies were reported to the NAIC’s Complaint Database System in the 2008 calendar year by state insurance departments. Of the complaints filed against insurers, 71,967 (36.7 percent) were related to auto policies.
Following are the top five reasons for complaints in 2008:
Delays: 26,844 complaints (19.1 percent)
Denial of claim: 25,851 complaints (18.4 percent)
Unsatisfactory settlement/offer: 20,021 complaints (14.2 percent)
Premium and rating: 6,644 complaints (4.7 percent)
Cancellation: 5,618 complaints (4 percent)
