In Nebraska, State Sen. Paul Schumacher has proposed Legislative Bill 1003, which would double the amount of automotive liability insurance required under state law to $50,000 per person, $100,000 per occurrence and $50,000 for property damages. These amounts are up from $25,000 per person, $50,000 per occurrence and $25,000 for property damage, respectively.

Insurance policy costs would rise 3 percent or $25 per year, according to estimates.

The American Insurance Association (AIA) opposes the bill, believing that state residents can’t afford the increase and that the legislation would lead to an increase in uninsured drivers.
