At the recent Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) World Congress, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it’s looking at new regulations in 2013 that would mandate “vehicle to vehicle” technology that could, according to NHTSA, eliminate up to 80 percent of vehicle crashes involving non-impaired drivers.
This technology, for example, could alert one driver that another driver is about to run a red light.
“Our research shows that these technologies could help prevent a majority of the collisions that typically occur in the real world, such as rear-end collisions, intersection crashes or collisions while switching lanes,” NHTSA Administrator David Strickland told The Detroit News.
NHTSA is currently testing this technology and will continue the testing till next summer. It’s believed that 25 percent of all vehicles could have this connected vehicle technology by 2020.
