There could be a lucky streak running through the collision repair industry. For the second time in a two-month period, a shop owner has hit it big with a state lottery. This time, Anthony Broccoli of Brock’s Auto Collision Center & Auto Repair in Warwick, Rhode Island, won $1 million in his state’s New Year’s raffle. In early November, a Wisconsin shop owner won a $9 million jackpot from a ticket purchased with friends (click HERE).
Broccoli took home $680,000 in winnings after taxes, the Providence Journal reported, but the longtime lottery player had a hard time believing he’d actually won the raffle. Broccoli missed the initial drawing New Year’s Eve, but saw the winning ticket number repeated on TV the next day. When he realized the winning ticket matched one of the two he purchased, he checked again online four times, just to be sure.
“I was actually saying, ‘Some jerk bought a ticket last minute, and he’s going to win,‘” said Broccoli, who bought one raffle ticket as soon as they were available in early December, then snagged another on a whim on Christmas Eve. “And it turned out that I was that jerk because I did buy a last-minute ticket and it turned out to be the winner.”
Broccoli and his wife Rebecca plan to continue working at their shop and use the winnings to put their two teenaged sons through college.
