Anti-Steering Legislation Advances in Washington State

The Washington House of Representatives approved Substitute House Bill 3053, which attempts to end insurer steering in auto glass repair claims. The bill is now in the Senate’s Financial Institutions & Insurance Committee.

The bill would require an insurer to determine if the vehicle owner had chosen a repairer, and it would prohibit an insurer from recommending a repairer if the vehicle owner has chosen one. If the vehicle owner has not chosen a repairer, the insurer must offer the names of at least two comparable repairers before suggesting one on its approved list.

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, through its retained counsel in Washington, distributed a fact sheet in opposition to H.B. 3053 to members of the state Legislature.
