March of Dimes will hold its annual Drive for Babies event at Road
America on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012. The money raised at this event will be
used to fund research, awareness, advocacy and educational programs to
prevent premature births and infant mortality. The event is a day of
lapping sessions and instruction that allows participants to drive their
own vehicles on the scenic, four-mile Road America Track in Elkhart
Lake, Wis. Participants receive a solid blend of driving instruction,
ranging from classroom in-car training, to ‘follow me’ drills. A wide
range of topics are discussed and shown at a PDX, including following a
‘racing line’, passing zones, speed limits and other general driving
techniques.
During the off-track intervals, participants can test their skills
behind the wheel on the autocross course. For an additional donation,
participants will also have the opportunity to sit shotgun while racing
legend Peter Cunningham whips them around the track. An appreciation
dinner and silent auction at The Osthoff Resort will complete the day’s
events with stories from special guest speaker Derek Bell.
Last year’s event attracted more than 160 drivers and nearly 400 driving enthusiasts, raising more than $80,000.
From now through Aug. 31, driver’s tickets are $250. Non-driving guests
are also welcome for $50 per person, and tickets for the dinner are
available to the public for $45 each.
