ASA Holds Webinar on Telematics Policy

During the webinar, participants heard from representatives of the aftermarket and the original equipment manufacturers on the current state of telematics and new technology policy.

ASAOn July 27th, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) held a webinar on the current state of telematics and new technology policy.

During the webinar, participants heard from representatives of the aftermarket and the original equipment manufacturers, including Donny Seyfer, AAM, chairman of ASA and co-owner of Seyfer Automotive in Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Chris Gardner, vice president of the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association; and Wayne Weikel, senior director of State Government Affairs for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

Following the presentations, participants had the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session with panelists. Among the topics discussed were:

  • OEMs are continuing to push for increased research and development (R&D) in the area of vehicle technology, which means these high-tech vehicles will become more and more prevalent on our roadways and in your shops.
  • The technology is developing so quickly that it often outpaces legislative oversight. Be prepared to see many more bills on this topic over the next few years. In the meantime, these vehicles are being sold, and like any vehicle they will wear out and need repair. This will create a need for new diagnostic techniques, advanced training and a greater awareness of privacy concerns/risks.
  • ASA continues to represent the aftermarket repair community and to serve as a leading voice in the telematics conversation.
