The New York State Senate passed S.B. 578, which makes it a felony to forge a certificate of insurance, auto insurance card or other papers required to legally operate a motor vehicle. These fake documents are frequently used to register cars so that owners can operate them without paying for auto insurance.
The bill also makes it a felony to sell 10 or more false insurance cards or documents, and it stiffens the penalties for those who commit auto insurance fraud.
A companion bill is being looked at in the New York Assembly and is currently before the Assembly’s Codes Committee.
