Sherwin-Williams Announces Support for NASCAR Race To Green Initiative

As the "Official Transportation Finishes of NASCAR," Sherwin-Williams applauds the NASCAR Green program.

Sherwin-Williams has announced its support for the second annual NASCAR Race To Green initiative, which is taking place now through April 27.

As the “Official Transportation Finishes of NASCAR,” Sherwin-Williams applauds the NASCAR Green program, through which NASCAR has long worked with dozens of motorsports teams on their sustainability programs. Sherwin-Williams also is supporting NASCAR’s green efforts through education initiatives and promoting awareness of low-VOC paints along with initial application for select teams currently in the industry.

Roush Fenway Racing uses Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes’ AWX Performance Plus waterborne refinish system on each of its six race cars. The No. 51 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Justin Algaier ran a special Sherwin-Williams paint scheme on April 11 in Darlington and was also painted using Sherwin-Williams’ AWX Performance Plus. The paint itself at highest potential has a 96 percent decrease in VOC emissions compared to solvent-borne basecoats and achieves 3.5 VOC compliance in all regulated areas.

“Sherwin-Williams and NASCAR should be applauded for educating NASCAR fans and the marketplace more generally about the value and availability of low-VOC paints,” said Allen Hershkowitz, Ph.D., senior scientist for the National Resources Defense Council. “Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can cause cancer, neurologic and reproductive harm and they are commonly used in paints. Once applied, VOCs evaporate into the air for months afterwards. By using its market and cultural influence to educate fans and other businesses about the availability of low-VOC paints and its ease of use, NASCAR and Sherwin-Williams are helping to move the marketplace toward a less toxic environment.”

For years, some of the biggest names in racing have trusted their race car finishes to Sherwin-Williams. According to Bobby Moody, director of motorsports for Sherwin-Williams, more than a dozen NASCAR teams currently use Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes.
