Study Shows More Experienced Drivers Are Worse at Texting and Driving

Older, more experienced drivers veered into other lanes more often when reading or sending texts than did younger, more inexperienced drivers.

An article in the Washington Post indicated that a new study from Wayne State University researchers shows that older and more experienced drivers are actually worse at texting and driving than younger and more inexperienced drivers.

The finding surprised researchers because they thought that more seasoned drivers would be able to handle distractions better than fledgling drivers. But it turns out that all of the 45- to 59-year-olds and 80 percent of 35- to 44-year-olds who said they texted a lot, could text one-handed and owned smartphones veered into other lanes when reading or sending texts. Only 40 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds and roughly 25 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds started crossing lanes while texting.
