Automotive component-supplier Delphi is sending an automated car nearly 3,500 miles across the country – from San Francisco to New York – in a test-drive that will aim to push self-driving car technology to its limits, USA Today reports.
This trip marks the first and longest cross-country trip in a self-driving vehicle.
A team of Delphi engineers left California on March 22 in a highly modified Audi crossover SUV which is equipped with special cameras, radar and software. The car is set to arrive in New York City during the first week of the New York International Auto Show (set to open Saturday, April 4), said USA Today.
The vehicle will travel six to eight hours each day and will be tested by a team of Delphi engineers who will closely watch the car’s performance.
