The Providence Journal reported that representatives of the auto body and insurance industries gathered in a second-floor room at the Rhode Island State House Tuesday, March 24 for an annual discussion over bills affecting how auto body shops handle repairs and insurance companies fill their claims.
According to the Providence Journal, the most heavily vetted issue during the two-hour-long hearing before the House Corporations Committee would allow for both first-party and third-party lawsuits to be brought against insurance companies.
Peter Petrarca, a lobbyist for the Auto Body Association of Rhode Island, explained the measure by saying it would provide protection, particularly in third-party property damage claims in which the insurance company might not be moving quickly enough. He said third parties are often “pushed to the side.”
