New Bill Would Require Dashboard Recall Warning Lights

New Democratic Bill Would Require Dashboard Recall Warning Lights, Mandatory Collision Avoidance Systems

Less aggressive Republican bill would require that new car dealers and rental car companies notify owners of any open recalls when a vehicle is brought in for service or rented out.

Capitol-buildingThe Detroit News reported that, in the wake of more than 120 deaths linked to faulty ignition switches and over 32 million vehicles recalled for faulty airbags, Senate Republicans and Democrats have introduced competing auto safety measures.

Democratic senators put forward a sweeping auto safety reform bill this week that, if passed, would require automakers to install warning lights on car dashboards to notify owners of safety recalls. The bill would also require crash-avoidance technologies and would lift the cap on delayed recall fines.

The less-aggressive Republican bill would require, according to the Detroit News, that new car dealers and rental car companies notify owners of any open recalls when a vehicle is brought in for service or rented out.
