Miss. Attorney General Begins Investigation into 'Steering'

Mississippi Attorney General Begins Investigation into Possible Steering

Jim Hood implored U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate auto insurers and steering in March 2015, and one month later filed a suit against State Farm.

The Mississippi Business Journal recently reported that Miss. Attorney General Jim Hood has begun an investigation of insurers that may be involved in steering policyholders to certain body shops.

The Mississippi Business Journal found that Hood sent identical letters to 12 insurance companies on July 9th, with a deadline to respond a week later. In the letter, Hood said that if he did not receive a response by the deadline, he “will assume your company is not interested in reaching an agreement and will proceed accordingly.”

All of the insurance companies responded by the deadline. The insurers were Alfa Insurance; Allstate; Direct General; CT Corporation System of Mississippi; Mississippi Farm Bureau; Nationwide; Progressive; Safeco; Shelter; Travelers; and USAA.

Hood has been very outspoken against insurance companies. In March 2015, he implored U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate auto insurers and steering. In April 2015, he filed a suit against State Farm that sought to recover damages for losses that the State of Mississippi suffered as a result of an alleged scheme by State Farm to mischaracterize wind damage as flood damage when adjusting the homeowner insurance claims of thousands of Mississippians in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
