ASA Partners with EPA to Help Shops Comply with New Rules

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Collision Repair Campaign, which aims to help shops comply with new regulations meant to reduce auto body emissions and human and environmental exposure to air toxics from auto body shops, has partnered with the Automotive Service Association (ASA). The EPA’s new auto refinishing regulations include several new equipment and training requirements, and the deadline to comply is Jan 8, 2011.

The EPA published its final auto refinishing regulation Jan. 9, 2008. Although the two-year Collision Repair Campaign includes more issues than the auto refinishing regulation, the new regulation is central to the campaign. Shops that have opened after Jan. 8, 2008, must be in compliance immediately. As the compliance date nears for existing shops, ASA says training and ensuring shop equipment is in compliance will be a necessity to operate a collision repair facility.

To view a summary of the regulations, visit www.asashop.org, log into the “members only” section and click on "Collision Division Tools."

The EPA will provide information about the campaign to NACE attendees.
