Shop’s ‘Do-It-Yourself’ Contest Creates Unique Marketing Opportunity

Springfield, Ill.-based Zara’s Collision Center is reaching out to a
population that some service providers may consider a lost cause – the
"do-it-yourselfer." During the month of July, the shop is asking
consumers to submit photos of their amateur body work online for a cash
prize in a contest dubbed "Don’t Quit Your Day Job."

"Welcome you lovers of duct tape, Visqueen, and red plastic wrap," the
shop’s contest Web page says. "We’re anxious to see your do-it-yourself
repair job."

Participants can submit photos of their homegrown body work on Zara’s Web site, and the winner of a $500 cash prize will be determined
by public votes.

With a name like "Don’t Quit Your Day Job," the contest reminds
consumers that it’s best to leave some jobs up to the professionals.
But with a $500 prize on the line, it could also foster a great deal of
good will between the shop and its community.
