Hyundai Position Statement: Auto Body Shops Should Perform Pre- and Post-Repair Scans

Hyundai on March 28 joined the growing list of OEMs calling for pre- and post-repair scans of collision-damaged vehicles.

Hyundai on March 28 joined the growing list of OEMs calling for pre- and post-repair scans of collision-damaged vehicles.

“Hyundai vehicles are equipped with multiple electronic components and systems within each vehicle,” the automaker says in a new position statement. “Therefore, it is important that vehicles involved in a collision have a pre-repair scan and post-repair scan so that repairers are aware of any diagnostic trouble codes that may be present, regardless if a warning light or malfunction indicator light is illuminated.”

A pre-repair scan will tell the body shop if there are diagnostic trouble codes or malfunctioning items within the vehicle, helping the shop “develop more accurate repair estimates prior to beginning repairs,” Hyundai says. A post-repair scan “provides confirmation that systems are functioning properly and calibrated.”

“Hyundai Motors America’s recommends conducting a pre-repair scan as appropriate to ensure safe and accurate repairs and that all vehicles receive a post-repair scan to ensure all systems and components are functioning, calibrated and communicating properly with no diagnostic trouble codes present,” the automaker explains.

No Reconditioned Steel or Aluminum Wheels

In a separate position statement issued on March 28, Hyundai says it “does not approve the use of reconditioned steel or aluminum wheels on any Hyundai vehicle.”

“Reconditioned wheels may not meet the same standards as newly manufactured wheels,” the automaker explains. “Reconditioned wheels may contribute to poor performance and compromise safety.”

Repairers must perform post-collision inspections on all wheels and pay “special attention to wheel(s) subject to the impact zone,” Hyundai says.

The only scenario in which steel or aluminum wheel repair would be appropriate is “surface treatment that restores cosmetic appearance of the finish coating,” the automaker adds.
